Ask ten experienced equestrians which breed is best for children and you'll get ten different answers β€” all of them defensible. What they'll almost universally agree on is that temperament matters more than breed, and that the individual horse matters more than anything.

That said, certain breeds have developed reputations for specific traits that make them consistently well-suited to young riders. Here are five that appear most frequently in quality youth programs around the world.

1. Welsh Pony

The Welsh Pony has been carrying children through the hills of Wales for centuries, and those generations of development show. Welsh Ponies are hardy, intelligent, and typically willing β€” they have enough spirit to be interesting for an advancing rider, enough common sense to be safe for a beginner. Their natural athleticism means they grow with a child rider from first lessons through first competitions.

Best for: Children ages 6–14, beginners through intermediate riders

2. Quarter Horse

America's most popular breed earns that distinction in part through its remarkable disposition. Quarter Horses are known for their calm, level-headed temperament, their willingness to work, and their versatility. From Western trail riding to English arena work, a well-bred Quarter Horse can do it all β€” calmly. They're also forgiving of the positional mistakes that beginner riders inevitably make.

Best for: Children ages 8 and up, Western and English disciplines

3. Haflinger

If there's a breed most often described as "bombproof" in youth programs, it's the Haflinger. These compact, powerful, golden ponies/small horses from the Austrian Alps were bred to work in rugged mountain conditions β€” which means very little phases them. They're also extraordinarily patient, which makes them ideal for nervous beginners or children with anxiety around horses. Their strength means a larger child or teen can also ride them comfortably.

Best for: Nervous beginners of any age, children ages 6–16

4. Connemara Pony

The Connemara Pony is the Irish gift to young equestrians. Athletic, sure-footed on varied terrain, and possessed of an excellent temperament, Connemaras make exceptional children's horses at a higher level of riding. They tend to be especially good jumpers and are often found in junior hunter/jumper rings excelling at levels that surprise people who underestimate them. Many serious young equestrians ride Connemaras into their early teens.

Best for: Advancing riders ages 8–16, English disciplines and jumping

5. Morgan

The Morgan is one of America's oldest breeds, and its combination of intelligence, willingness, hardiness, and tractability has made it a consistent favorite in youth programs. Morgans are known for their strong bond with their handlers and their desire to please, which translates to a forgiving, partnership-oriented riding experience. They tend to be on the smaller side of full-sized horses, which makes them manageable for younger teen riders.

Best for: Children ages 10 and up, both Western and English disciplines

A note on this list: Any horse, regardless of breed, can be a wonderful or terrible mount for a child depending on their individual training, health, and temperament. Always consult with a qualified instructor before matching a horse to a young rider, and never skip a thorough trial period.
